NFT

Originally posted on March 11, 2021.

The other day, I minted my first NFT on zora.co. It’s a short piece of music that I made by taking the numbers and letters in my Ethereum wallet address and using them to generate the rhythm, bass line and melody. You can listen to it, and bid to own it, here.

It was a fun process and reminded me of when I used to upload works-in-progress to Soundcloud. My plan is to keep uploading more things over time – maybe some older live recordings and unreleased demos too – to form a sort of scrapbook. Thanks to the functionality of NFTs, it would all be totally free to listen to, but anyone interested could also bid to own the “original” – a piece of digital memorabilia. If this sounds interesting, or confusing, or even stupid, please read on!

I first stumbled upon NFTs on a tangent from reading about Bitcoin a few months ago, and have been exploring the space and learning from different people about its potential for musicians since. If you haven’t come across the term “NFT” before, these articles are great:

NFT Skeptics Guide

If you’ve followed me for a while you’ll probably know I love all things DIY. I’ve always self-funded, self-produced and self-released, and I’ve always been interested in circumventing the ugly aspects of the music industry that traditionally prevent musicians from having creative and financial freedom. Since music became digital (and especially now, with live music off the table for a while), many musicians have found it hard to generate an income solely from music, but the persistent and inventive ones have made it work by doing things like selling t-shirts, doing Skype lessons, running a Patreon, etc. For example, I digitised my music collection the instant I found some CD-ripping software as a kid, so it took me a while to come around to the idea of selling vinyl, but after making sure it satisfied my most important creative principle (“make cool shit with cool people”), I’m glad I did it, because it was a huge help with affording to go on tour.

My interest in NFTs is the same as my interest in any new technology or idea – how can it contribute to providing artists with more resources (i.e. time and money) to make more art? The answer in this case is pretty simple – NFTs are a way for artists to re-monetise the digital content they were making all along. It’s very early days, but I really like the idea of traditional music memorabilia (rare songs, demos, videos, artworks, etc) going digital, especially in a time where most of it is digital in the first place. Reliance on social media has distracted many of us into becoming content creators – maybe NFTs will help us get back to making art!

Edit: here’s a reasonable explanation of the environmental impact of (some of) this technology.

Edit 2: for further reading on the use cases for crypto in music generally, this is amazing.

Neural DSP Contest

Originally posted April 12, 2020.

To celebrate the first birthday of my signature guitar plugin with Neural DSP, “Archetype: Plini”, I have devised a short backing track for a solo + remix contest.

You can either: (1) play a solo over the backing track, or (2) create a “remix” using the stems provided. For example: compose a new riff using the drums, turn some of the layers into a techno song - anything you can think of, as long as it isn’t longer than one minute!

People of all ages, skill levels and instruments are invited to participate.

I will be judging the entries on their creativity and inventiveness - characteristics which I believe are not limited by experience or equipment.

I will select a top ten and three prize winners for each category and announce them here and on instagram in the second week of May. The winners (six in total) will receive a free license for any Neural DSP plugin of their choosing.

SOLO: DOWNLOAD BACKING TRACK

REMIX: DOWNLOAD THE STEMS

Submissions are now closed - thank you!

Ok, wow. There were over 600 entries. That means we created 10+ hours of new music together! Thank you to everyone who took part in this for being absolutely wonderful & inspiring virtual collaborators. We will have to do it again sometime! I watched every single one (many I had to watch more than once) and narrowed it down to a selection of my favourite solos and remixes. You can check them all out on instagram by clicking the @names below.

Every Piece Matters

Originally posted on February 5, 2016.

In 2014, I released a song called "Ko Ki" in order to fundraise for a volunteering trip to Cambodia led by the wonderful non-profit organisation Raw Impact. At the beginning of 2015, I went to Cambodia, to help construct a community centre for the people of Ko Ki Village. This was an unforgettable experience – everything from the joy of playing games with some of the happiest kids I've ever seen, to the overwhelming realisation that I was able to use my love of music to benefit the lives of a community that barely even has access to clean water or electricity. Recently, I read that Raw Impact was embarking on its most ambitious project yet – to prevent the forced relocation of 100 families currently living in slums outside Phnom Penh. Every Piece Matters is about "providing land for families so we can bring safe housing, primary education for their kids, rescue from debt slavery and provide a steady job for Mum and Dad. For every $5,000AUD pledged, one family can live on their own land." After seeing the work that Raw Impact has done already, and being a part of one of their teams, there is no doubt in my mind that they can make this happen. For more information about Raw Impact and this project, click here.

100% OF THE PROCEEDS FROM THIS SONG FROM NOW UNTIL THE END OF JUNE (WHEN THE FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN ENDS) WILL GO DIRECTLY TO RAW IMPACT
